Microsoft 365 Basic vs. Business Premium

| By ITS microsoft-365securitylicensing

Many businesses select Microsoft 365 plans based solely on pricing without recognizing the significant security differences between tiers. Business Premium includes enhanced protective features like Microsoft Defender for Business, Intune device management, and Conditional Access — none of which are available in Basic plans.

Who Should Upgrade?

We strongly recommend Business Premium for organizations that:

  • Manage sensitive data
  • Operate remote or hybrid teams
  • Need compliance adherence (HIPAA, GDPR)

The security investment justifies its modest additional cost compared to potential breach expenses.

Conditional Access

Think of Conditional Access like a security guard. It enables rules that control access based on location, device status, and network conditions. For example:

  • Block unfamiliar geographic login attempts — if someone tries to log in from a country your team doesn’t operate in, access is denied
  • Prevent unmanaged device access — only approved devices can reach company data

These protections are completely absent from Basic plans.

Intune Device Management

Business Premium provides remote device oversight capabilities including:

  • Remote data wiping for lost or stolen devices
  • Enforced security updates across all managed devices
  • Encryption enforcement and password policies
  • Application management and deployment

These are essential for any distributed workforce.
